Dennis Day, CEO/Founder,
D-Day Media Group Inc.
Dennis Day is a media visionary. In the Fall
of 2002 he founded D-Day Media Group Inc. Day's career spans
more than 30 years in leadership roles within the public and
private sectors.
Day holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology
from Fisk University and a Master of Arts degree from the
University of Chicago's School of Social Sciences, where he
was awarded a Ford Foundation fellowship in Urban and Continuing
Education.
As an educator, Day was appointed Assistant
Superintendent of Schools of the Illinois Adult Correctional
and Vocational Schools. He possesses the New York State Administrator's
certificate and has taught in New York City public schools
as well as at the baccalaureate level. Currently, he serves
as a member of the Diversity Advisory Panel for the Kaplan
School of Education.
Day has held a number of government appointments.
He was a legislative analyst for the Illinois Speaker of the
House, Director of New York State's Affirmative Action Programs
for Fair Housing, overseeing Minority Women's Business Development
in all state-assisted housing construction. He is now the
Director of the Upper Manhattan Office of Rent Administration.
As a musician and composer, Day studied jazz
performance in the prestigious Jazz Masters Program at the
Manhattan Music Conservatory and has earned esteem within
the jazz community. As a performing artist, Day's first recording
group, The Valiants, were label-mates with the Jackson Five
on Steeltown Records in Gary, Indiana in 1966. Leaving Northwest
Indiana for Fisk University in Nashville, Day formed The Jades
and recorded a modest Cash Box-listed hit - a ballad, "My
Loss Your Gain." While in Nashville he was a much sought-after
demo artist, recording for Columbia Screen Gems on Music Row,
penning country and popular songs.
During the early '80s, Day teamed with Dr. Donald
Byrd's award-winning Blackbirds, performing their classic
hits, "Walking in Rhythm" and "Happy Music." He was occasionally
featured as lead vocalist. During that period, he formed his
own ensembles, eventually settling in New York City, where
he continues to appear in venues ranging from concerts, clubs,
and festivals to schools and churches.
According to jazz critic and author Herb Boyd
of Downbeat Magazine and the Amsterdam News, "Dennis Day possesses
a versatile, easy, and distinctive vocal style and a melodious
voice, reminiscent of Brook Benton, Marvin Gaye, and the Platters
great lead singer Tony Williams."
Day expects to complete the Master of Fine Arts
degree in Media Arts at Long Island University in 2004. His
media credentials began as an intern reporter for the New
York Amsterdam News. His columns and articles have appeared
in that publication and in the Daily Challenge, the Gannett
Westchester News, the Philadelphia Evening Bulletin, the Staten
Island Advance, the Capitol Spotlight of Washington DC, the
Times of Northwest Indiana, and in U.S. government publications.
He was a reporter/producer for Drum Television
in New York City. In recent years, Day has produced "Global
Village Talk" for Manhattan Neighborhood Public Access Television.
His latest, still unpublished, work is a monograph entitled
"How American Television Shaped a War Narrative."
In 1999 Day released his first CD, "For Only
You," featuring original compositions and performances by
saxophone virtuoso Art Porter, Jr. A second CD entitled "Dennis
Day Back in the Day" is scheduled for release in 2004 and
features instrumental and original vocal compositions. In
2001 Day produced the Fisk Jubilee Singers live performance
at the Schomberg Center for Research in Black Culture - a
historic first. In 1999 Day also formed Alylela Publishing
Company, cataloging his compositions and those of aspiring
composers.
In 2003 D-Day Records released the 20th Anniversary
Limited Edition of the CD, "Irene Day - Touch Somebody's Life,"
a compilation of 10 gospel, spiritual, and inspirational songs.
He also piloted a radio program, "Gospel Spotlight," on New
York's WWRL, showcasing new music.
Day is currently producing and directing a documentary
entitled "9/11 - Unfinished Business."
